Mae Gai Toms yn edafedd cryf a lliwgar ym mrethyn y byd canu Cymraeg gyda’i albwm diweddaraf ‘The Wild, the Tame and the Feral’ yn dangos ei fod a’r gallu yn y Saesneg hefyd. Dysgodd ei grefft yng nghylchoedd cerddorol llawr gwlad, rwan yn gyfansoddwr brwd gyda chasgliad swmpus o ddeunydd gwreiddiol. Mae o hefyd yn gitarydd i’r band roc/amgen Brython Shag.

Gyda’i ffrindiau ysgol, sefydlodd y band ska-rock poblogaidd Anweledig. Yn 1996 ffurfiodd Mim Twm Llai ac ennill sawl gwobr BBC Radio Cymru am y gwaith, rhan fwyaf am y cyfansoddwr gorau. Mae’r deunydd newydd yn atsain o Mim Twm Llai ond yn ehangach o ran cynnwys, mynegiant a ffocws. Mae geiriau yn chwarae rhan mawr yng ngwaith Gai Toms ac fel arfer yn datgan yr arddull gerddorol. Mae’r arddull gerddorol yn cynnwys elfennau o’r adfywiad gwerin, roots a roc amgen, a mae Gai wastad yn barod i arbrofi. Dyma rhai o’r bobl sydd wedi dylanwadau ar ei waith - Woody Guthrie, Meic Stevens, John Prine, Nick Cave, Gruff Rhys/SFA, PJ Harvey, Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes, Ty Segal, Tom Waits, Bjork, Tom Morello... a mwy!

Yn fyw, mae gan Gai Toms fand o gerddorion sy’n gallu codi’r to gyda’r deunydd uwch-tempo yn ogystal a chodi blew eich gwâr gyda’r deunydd tawelach. Yn ôl rhai, mae gan Gai lais tebyg i’r diweddar Joe Strummer o The Clash, sy’n rhoi rywfath o ogwydd pync ar ben y cwbl. Pan fu’r galw, mae Gai yn hapus i berfformio heb y band, mae nosweithiau ‘acwstic’ yn rhoi cyfle iddo berfformio caneuon gwahanol, caneuon sy’n haeddu gwrandawiad.

O leoliadau gwaethaf y byd i wyliau fel SXSW (Austin, Texas) Smithsonian Folklife Festival (Washington DC), Yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol a Gwyl Rhif.6 (Portmeirion) mae Gai Toms wedi gweld tipyn, ond wastad yn barod am ‘chwaneg.

Review: Link2Wales / Rhag '12 / gan Neil Crud

Bangor born, Blaenau bred Gai Toms releases his second LP, a double album. ‘A double album?’ I hear you say… Yeah…
CD1 has you imagining Gai meandering through the slag heaps of a grey Blaenau Ffestiniog to the bleak grey concrete hell of Trawsfynnyd Nuclear Power Station and poking rain sodden camp fires in the black mountains of Snowdonia playing his Joe Strummer / Dan Amor style acoustic guitar. The album weaves its wistful way with stars and circles towards the title track Bethel.
Fucking love the duet on the opening track… It’s worth the entrance fee for that alone…

CD2  is a different affair ranging from folk to a dash of hash reggae to a Jona Lewie sprinkling of christmas on Diwrnod Eliffantod, to pop tart rockesque Tan Oer or the Maffia-ish Awyr Las.
The Anweledig influence of his 90′s ska band leaves its mark like a faded tattoo on the album without necessarily stamping all over it. In fact you’d be a better man than I if you can actually pin Gai down to an actual genre. The Gai’s all over shop, even chucking traditional daytime Radio Cymru jock-rock in there on Stiletos Gwydr, and 70′s style US TV show theme music on Glaw Yr Haf. He is the Super Furry Ffestiniog Animal of 2012 and you should click here and buy this eclectic release and make it a welcome addition to your collection.

Review: Planet, The Welsh Internationalist. Issue 192. / Dec 08 / by Iwan Llwyd

A Clean Slate?

Although the influence of the north Wales quarries and their culture - ironically so alien to the quarryowners themselves - has declined rapidly over the last half century, this recent release shows the continuing influence of quarry communities. Rhwng y Llygru a'r Glasu (Between the Ages of Polluting and Renewing, www.sbensh.com £11.99) is singer-songwriter Gai Toms' first fully fledged solo album. Gai has been prominent in the Welsh rock scene over the last 16 years, first as a leading member of the Blaenau Ffestiniog based Ska Rock band - Anweledig, and his second incarnation as Mim Twm Llai. His latest offering is an eco-concept album, reflecting not only his concerns about the effects of man's industrial activities on his hometown, but also the wider effects of global warming in 'Llosgi' (Burn), homelesness in 'Cardotyn' (Tramp) and waht the future holds for the next generation in 'Fy Mab' (My Son).

The album was mostly self-produced by Gai himself using clean energy at his home in the mountains of north Wales, and it is packaged with recycled material. The musical material ranges from quiet, lyrical acoustic songs to witty musical contradictions suach as inferno blues guitar, backed by a recycled drum kit to create his own unique statements about the world of today and of tomorrow. Once again Gai toms has made an important contribution not only to the Welsh musical scene, but also to much wider social and political debates.

Review: The Ecologist. Dec / Jan 09 / by Eifion Rees

Rhwng Y Llygru a'r Glasu: Album www.sbensh.com £11.99 ... 'It's not me who's going to save the world, it's up to all of us', sings Gai Toms - through half a salvaged canoe. The Welsh singer's new eco album is all about spreading the word on the enviroment in the greenest way possible. He does it using a drum kit made of plastic and scrap metal, local North Wales studio facilities powered by clean energy, recycled CD packaging and intelligent lyrics with a green bent. The 13 songs on Rhwng y Llygru a'r Glasu are heartfelt and powerful, and Toms could choose no more fittingly ironic a medium for pleading, cajoling and shaming us into cleaning up our act than dirty rock'n'roll. Da iawn wir.
